Favourite UK Vegan Products
Here are a few to start with.
1. Fruit and Veg. Does that count? Contrary to popular belief, I don't eat that much cake.
I do like cake, but I'd much rather have a load of fruit and vegetables. You just don't need so many recipes for those. Eating a variety of fruit and vegetables is obviously very good for you,
as they contain fibre, phytochemicals, minerals and vitamins. This includes the antioxidants vitamin C and vitamin E, iron and calcium. My personal favourites are raw spinach, red pepper, aubergine, tomato, avocado, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries.
2. Vecon stock paste. It has no added salt (unlike stock cubes), is gluten free and it contains vitamins A, B, B2, B3, (the much discussed)B12, C and iron! I use it to make stock and add a smidge to all my sauces. Find it online at Goodness Direct and in health food shops.
3. Tofu. Yummy. Tofu has lots of protein and calcium too. The first time I had it I thought it was disgusting. That was completely down to my own incompetence and was not the tofu's fault. Well I didn't know you had to get all the water out, flavour it and fry it carefully, did I?
This taifun stuff is foolproof though! It's firmer than most so doesn't go squishy and fall apart, and it has built in flavour so it's ready to eat. I like the smoked one with almonds & sesame and the basil flavour one the best. You can get taifun tofu at Goodness Direct and in health food shops.

4. Realeat vegemince. You can get this in most supermarkets as well as health food shops. Perfect for spaghetti bolognese, chilli, lasagne and shepherd's pie. It's frozen and has a resealable bag, so is very convenient, and it tastes great too. My sister Rosie isn't vegetarian but uses this in preference to anything else.
5. Pure margarine. Well, obviously it's high in fat because it's margarine. The good thing is that they're not hydrogenated, there are no artificial additives in it and you you can find it easily in supermarkets. The green soya margarine has folic acid, vitamins A, B6, B12, D and E, and the yellow sunflower margarine has all of these plus omega 3 and 6 oils. I use pure for cooking and have great results.
6. Soya milk. There are loads of different sorts of soya milk (and other dairy-free milks such as rice milk or oat milk), and everyone has different preferences. My favourite is unsweetened soya milk that comes in long-life boxes, as it doesn't have sugar added so it's good for sweet and savoury cooking as well as in tea! I like the 'so good' alternative to milk that you find in supermarkets next to the dairy milk too, especially on cereal and in hot chocolate. So good contains 20% more calcium than semi-skimmed milk!
7. Chocolate! Yes, vegans CAN eat chocolate. Milk chocolate obviously contains milk, but PROPER dark chocolate shouldn't contain dairy products. Green & Black's dark chocolate is vegan, as is lindt dark chocolate, and many other dark chocolates too. If you prefer something creamier for eating, then organica do a chocolate couveture with extra cocoa butter that tastes a bit like galaxy! You can also get chocolate made with soya milk from most supermarkets in the 'free from' isle, and there are loads of chocolates, bars and truffles around.
Check out your health food shop, montezumas, animal aid or the vegan store.

8. Alpro soya yoghurt. I love this stuff. It's great for breakfast over strawberries and raspberries. It contains protein, calcium, vitamins B2 and B12 and also has omega 3 and 6. The small pots are great for packed lunches. The provamel chocolate/vanilla/caramel desserts are good too, and both are available in supermarkets as well as health food shops.
9. Original Source. I'd be a bit lost without original source shampoo and shower gel. It's cheap, you can get it in lots of shops and supermarkets and it's marked vegan. They're made with natural oils, so the fruity ones are intensely fruity.
10. Bio-D and Clearspring cleaning products. I did use Ecover but there's a bit of controversy now about their animal testing. You can get washing up liquid, laundry liquid, dishwasher gel...everything you need. Try health food shops or online at The Green Shop.
11. Co-op toothpaste. Co-op is great as they label their vegan wine and have many fair trade and vegan products. Their toothpaste is not tested on animals, contains no animal ingredients and it works! I also like their anti-perspirant deoderant. Look out for the BUAV bunny rabbit symbol and you'll know it's not tested on animals.
